THE EUROPEAN Parliament has controversially told auto manufacturers they have until January 2012 to ensure private diesel passenger vehicles with a reference mass exceeding 2000 kg, designed to carry 7 or more occupants including the driver comply with the European Union's (EU) new Euro V fuel and engine emission standards. This is three years longer than the time given to smaller standard petrol cars, for which the regulation will come into force from September 2009.
