BY KEITH NUTHALL THE EUROPEAN Commission may block Italian government plans to pay electricity bill subsidies to laminated aluminium, alumina, chlorine-soda, lead and zinc producers in Sardinia. Brussels is now formally investigating these planned payments, because it fears they will break European Union (EU) state aid rules. The Commission is particularly riled because some money would go to Euroallumina, which it ordered last year to repay previous subsidies it deemed illegal.
