THE EUROPEAN Commission launched two public consultations this week (February 25) on plans to prevent and detect tax evasion and improve tax collection across the European Union (EU). The first consultation is on developing a European Taxpayer's Code, which would clarify the rights and obligations of both taxpayers and tax authorities across the EU. The second such exercise is on a European Tax Identification Number (EU TIN), which would help tax authorities identify EU taxpayers.
