EU TO REQUIRE DUE DILIGENCE CHECKS FOR CONFLICT MINERALS

The European Union (EU) is to require companies importing certain minerals to carry out ‘due diligence’ checks on their suppliers to ensure they are not funding conflict or human rights violations, under a draft regulation approved in the European Parliament in Strasbourg today (March 16).  The ‘conflict minerals’ regulation will require all but the smallest EU importers, smelters and refiners of tin, tungsten, tantalum and gold as well as their ores to carry out the checks when sourcing from conflict and high risk areas, such as the Democratic Republic ...
