THE EUROPEAN Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has proposed that the European Commission restricts the use of intentionally added microplastics in products from which they will inevitably be released to the environment, including paints and coatings. The proposal – which could lead to an outright ban on them being included in paints and coatings within the EU – will now be assessed by ECHA scientific committees and a formal regulation could be presented to the Commission for approval in early 2020.
