AN EFFECTIVE ban on the use of cadmium in all plastics used or sold in the European Union (EU) is being considered by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). It has launched a public consultation on the idea, which has been pushed by the European Commission. The use of cadmium in plastics within the EU is already tightly restricted for 16 plastics materials – including PVC, polyurethane, epoxy resins, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-impact polystyrene, polypropylene (PP) and others.
