EU PUSHES AHEAD WITH ACCIDENT-FREE TOBACCO PRODUCT STANDARDS

INTERNATIONAL standards ensuring cigarettes are designed with a reduced risk of causing fires have been requested by the European Commission. The European Committee for Standardisation is now considering approving standards by 2010 to ensure a "reduced ignition propensity of cigarettes." This follows Finland drafting a regulation ensuring all Finland-sold cigarettes are tested for potentially causing fires in bedding and upholstered furniture, under existing USA standard - ASTM E2187.
