The European Union (EU) must continue awarding free allowances for carbon emissions to energy-intensive industries such as the non-ferrous metals sector, the EU’s energy and climate commissioner-designate Miguel Arias Cañete has said.Speaking during his confirmation hearing in the European Parliament in Brussels yesterday (October 1), he said that free allowances should be given to efficient industry players through the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) to avoid pushing manufacturing out of Europe to jurisdictions with weaker climate controls.
