EU FOOD SAFETY ALERT SERVICE POSTS RECORD NUMBER OF WARNINGS

A RECORD number of warnings about food safety problems throughout the European Union (EU) were posted in 2007 by the EU's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). The European Commission has announced that 7,354 such warnings were circulated to all EU food safety authorities on a publicly available database, 13.5% up on 2006. The Commission is claiming this is a sign that the system is working well rather than Europe facing a boom in food contamination problems.
