EU FOOD LABELLING LAWS – ALLERGINICITY

BY KEITH NUTHALLNEW European Union (EU) food labelling rules have come into force insisting complete contents of foodstuffs are listed. The new directive scraps the '25% rule', previously allowing compound ingredients comprising less than 25% of the product to be omitted from labels. Also, a list of ingredients liable to cause allergies must be highlighted on labels, for instance nuts, eggs, fish and mustard. From this week, new products not complying with these rules will be banned, although, goods already on the market or labelled previously can still be sold.* ...
