EUROPEAN Union (EU) construction companies could have to follow tough harmonised planning rules in districts prone to flooding, if a proposed EU flood directive is approved. The European Commission is trying to force all EU member states to have a high standard of anti-flood programmes. Its proposed blueprint would insist member states stage preliminary flood risk assessments of river basins and coastal zones.
