THE BOOM in counterfeit cigarettes being smuggled into the European Union (EU) is intensifying, according to the latest figures from the European Commission. It says EU customs officials seized 156 million packets' worth of fake cigarettes in 2006, up 380% on 2005. Of the 2006 haul, 92% came from China, with just 3% from the United Arab Emirates, 1% from Algeria, 1% from Egypt, 1% from Serbia, 1% from Malaysia and 1% from other countries.
