EU COMMISSION PROPOSES RAISING MINIMUM DUTY LEVELS

MEDITERRANEAN countries face raising duties on fortified wines such as port and sherry under proposals to increase minimum European Union excise duties by 31%. Fortified wine tax would increase by 9 Euro cents in Greece and Cyprus on 70cl bottles; 8 cents in Malta; 3 cents in Portugal. For spirits, Cyprus they would rise 31 cents on 70cl. For beer, the effect would be negligible.
