EU AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION ROUND UP – TUNA QUOTAS SLASHED

THE EUROPEAN Commission will close the bluefin tuna fishery in the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean for rest of 2007 because the annual quota of 16,779.5 tonnes has been exhausted. Fisheries controlled by (Greek) Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Portugal and Spain will affected. Italy and France closed their own fisheries in July and August respectively.
EU fishing Commissioner Joe Borg said: "Clearly there are problems of over fishing a stock already threatened with collapse...the Commission will do all it can to address these issues ...
