EU AGENCY ECHA WIELDS SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCE OVER EUROPEAN TOBACCO SECTOR’S USE OF CHEMICALS

THE TOBACCO industry in Europe needs to keep a close eye on the work of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), the European Union’s (EU) chemical agency, which has a key role in banning or restricting the use of tobacco ingredients, by-products and manufacturing chemicals. A good example is titanium dioxide, used to make filters by some manufacturers. ECHA’s Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) has advised that evidence indicates the chemical could cause cancer through inhalation.
