AMERICA'S Environmental Protection Agency says that US ethanol producers may be violating the country's Clean Air Act. In a letter to the industry, the EPA said "most, if not all" US ethanol producing plants are releasing volatile organic compounds into the air. Tests at five plants found formaldehyde and acetic acid in the atmosphere. The EPA is expected to ask the US$2.48 billion-a-year industry to spend more than US$1 million per plant on pollution-cutting equipment, EPA administrator Tom Skinner has said.
