The UK countryside is not generally regarded as a cradle of innovation. However, business data and the increased visibility of rural business thanks to social media indicate that countryside entrepreneurship is emerging as a major contributor to the domestic start-up sector.
An August 2023 report by Venture Forward, a research initiative by domain registry GoDaddy, found that 94,464 rural microbusiness had been started in Britain in the previous 12 months, representing more than a quarter of the country’s 2.3 million microbusinesses set up that year (1).
