UTILITIES are being asked by the European Commission whether European Union (EU) legislation promoting the use of biomass energy sources should include mandatory sustainability standards. In an on-line consultation ending September 30, the Commission wants views about whether an EU biomass energy sustainability scheme should be imposed and if so, what guidance or rules should be introduced "to ensure that the use of biomass for energy purposes avoids environmental risks".
