EFSA VEAL CALF WELFARE REPORT

INTENSIVE calf rearing systems pose a range of risks to young livestock, a new European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) report has concluded. It warned that probable risks included inadequate ventilation, exposure to pathogens causing respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders and others. Less likely risks included insufficient access to water, unbalanced diets, poor health monitoring, iron deficiency and restricted floor space, the latter two posing "very serious" hazards to calves.
