EFSA RAISES CONCERN OVER FOOD COLOURING

BY KEITH NUTHALL

THE EUROPEAN Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has raised concern about the safety of food colouring Red 2G (E 128), used in certain breakfast sausages and burger meat. EFSA has noted Red 2G is converted in the body into a substance called aniline, that "should be considered as a carcinogen". EFSA said it "is therefore not possible to determine a level of intake for aniline." It has informed the European Commission of its concerns.
