EFSA OILS AND FATS HEALTH CLAIMS ASSESSMENT

BY KEITH NUTHALLTHE EUROPEAN Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has backed adding to a European Union (EU) regulation 'on the use of nutrition and health claims' a series of guidelines on claims made by food processors about fats and oils used in their products. These would impose statistical rules, for instance, 'high unsaturated fat', would have to entail unsaturated fat being at least 70% of the fat content.
