ECJ REJECTS BRITISH BID TO SCRAP EU PASSPORT SECURITY RULES

BY ALAN OSBORN The European Court of Justice (Grand Chamber) has rejected a request by the UK for the annulment of an EU regulation setting out standards for the security features, including bio-metrics, to be carried on passports and other travel documents in the EU. The dispute dates back to 2004 when the EU Council of Ministers decided to exclude the UK from taking part in adoption of the regulation on the grounds that this was "a development of provisions of the Schengen acquis in which the United Kingdom does not take part."
