EASTERN EUROPE FINES OVER PRE-EU ACCESSION STOCKPILING

THE EUROPEAN Commission fined Poland was also fined Euro 7.7 million and the Czech Republic Euro 6.2 million for hoarding excess meat stocks ahead of joining the European Union (EU) in 2004, allowing them to flood European markets once tariff barriers were removed. Poland was also fined Euro 473,000 and Latvia Euro 204,000 for hoarding wine and other eastern European countries were penalised for stockpiling fruit, rice and milk.
