DUTY-FREE sales of tobacco rose last year, despite some catastrophic hits being taken by a world travel industry still reeling from September 11. An increase of 6.1 per cent to US$2.3 billion was also the first year-on-year rise for years. Its share of the global travel retail market had fallen from 24 per cent in 1983 to 11.6 per cent in 2002, according to figures released by market analysts the Moodie Report.
