February 1st, 2005 BY KEITH NUTHALLTHE EUROPEAN Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) has called for better coordination of treatment for drug addicts and the mentally ill, because many patients suffer from both problems. Indeed, the Lisbon-based European Union (EU) agency says that 30-50% of psychiatric patients in Europe also have a substance use disorder, mainly with alcohol, sedatives or cannabis.
