COMMON GREENHOUSE EMISSIONS ASSESSMENT FORGED FOR CITIES

BY KEITH NUTHALL

AN INTERNATIONAL Standard for Determining Greenhouse Gas Emissions for Cities has been launched at a UN World Urban Forum. It calculates emissions per head, allowing comparative analysis. Emissions vary widely depending on energy sources, climate, transportation, waste systems and urban density. For instance, packed New York produces 10.4 tonnes of CO2 per head; spacious Denver 21.3 tonnes. *www.unep.org/urban_environment
