CO2 ACID SEAS WEAKEN SHELL STABILITY

FRENCH and Dutch researchers warn oyster and mussel health is being risked by CO2 emissions' making the world's seas significantly more acidic. The Netherlands Institute of Ecology and the Oceanographic laboratory of the French National Scientific Research Centre have noted projections ocean pH will fall 0.4 units by 2100. Tests show resulting cuts in carbonate and ion concentrations weaken mussels and oysters' production of calcium carbonate-based shells.
