CANADA’S TOBACCO MAJORS TO PAY OVER CDN$1 BILLION IN SMUGGLING SETTLEMENT

BY KEITH NUTHALL IMPERIAL Tobacco Canada and Rothmans, Benson & Hedges (RBH) have agreed to pay together more than CDN$1 billion in a settlement with the Canadian federal government and provinces over smuggling in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The payout will end a long-running Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigation into allegations that tobacco products made by both companies had been exported to the USA and then illicitly re-exported to Canada, avoiding the payment of duty.
