BRUSSELS PROPOSES MAJOR INCREASE IN MINIMUM RATES FOR TOBACCO DUTY

BY KEITH NUTHALL THE EUROPEAN Commission has proposed increasing the minimum rate of excise duty payable on cigarettes sold in the European Union (EU) from the current Euro 64/1,000 cigarettes to Euro 90 by 2014. Brussels thinks the measure will reduce smoking by 10% in most member states over the next five years.
