BRUSSELS CLEARS SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES FOR SHETLANDS AIRPORT

THE EUROPEAN Commission has approved the payment of GBP6.7 million (EUR7.7 million) in public subsidies to the Scottish government-owned Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL), annually until 2022, to operate the Shetland Islands’ Sumburgh Airport. Given the islands’ remoteness and sparse population, the Commission concluded that without the airport, the Shetlands “would face significant disadvantages in terms of connectivity and economic development compared to other European regions”.
