BMW – MAGNESIUM

BY JONATHAN THOMSONGERMANY'S BMW is planning to expand the use of magnesium in its vehicles after developing the "world's first" magnesium/aluminium crankcase for a water-cooled engine. Describing magnesium as "the ideal lightweight material" the carmaker's engineers claim to have overcome problems created by high temperatures and corrosion. The weight of the composite crankcase has been reduced by one-quarter, resulting in improved performance and economy.
