BY RICHARD HURSTBHP Billiton, one of the world's largest aluminium producers, has claimed that the boom in Chinese aluminium smelting is putting pressure on global alumina stocks and that any unforeseen disruptions to the world supply of the mineral would have an immediate affect on production of the metal.Indeed, Mike Salamon, president of Melbourne, Australia-based, BHP Billiton's aluminium division, said "our expansion plans will lift output closer to six million tons (up from 4.2 million tonnes) in the next few years."
