AUSTRIA ECJ TYROL MOTORWAY LORRY BAN RULING

BY KEITH NUTHALLTHE EUROPEAN Court of Justice (ECJ) has declared illegal a lorry ban on a key motorway in the Austrian Tyrol, linking Germany to Italy. Judges have declared that the regional law breaks European Union (EU) treaty rules on free movements of goods and so must be lifted. The Tyrol government banned in 2003 lorries exceeding 7.5 tonnes from carrying goods such as stone, waste, soil, timber, cereals or other vehicles on a 46km section of the A12 motorway in the Inn valley, to cut air pollution in the area's sensitive Alpine environment.
