BY KEITH NUTHALLAUSTRALIA has made a formal bid for an extension of its jurisdiction over its submarine continental shelf, taking it beyond the standard 200 nautical miles from its coasts, granting exclusive rights over potentially lucrative non-ferrous metal seabed deposits.Its submission to the United Nation's Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf will now be considered under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which will examine whether the seabed claimed is geologically linked to mainland Australia.If it agrees, Australian jurisdiction would ...
