AUDITORS CALL FOR COMMISSION TO OVERHAUL ANTI-FRAUD OFFICE

THE EUROPEAN Union’s financial watchdog, the European Court of Auditors, is calling for the European Commission “to step up its fight against fraud in EU spending”, giving its anti-fraud office, OLAF more of a “a strategic and oversight role”, rather than the largely operational focus it has at present. Its audit found that the Commission “lacks comprehensive information on the scale, nature and causes of fraud” against the EU budget – hence such crimes continue to be committed.
