BY PHILIP FINE THE UNITED States' Appalachian Basin has come up strong in a recently released digitised mapping assessment of US coal regions. Of the 93 billion short tons of the basin's original coal reserves, about 66 billion short tons remain. The basin extends through Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia and was one of five regions recently assessed by the United States Geological Survey.
