ANTI-SMOKING ADVERTS AT FILMS CAN ACTUALLY BOOST SMOKING SAY EXPERTS

SHOWING anti-smoking advertising before films that may glamorise the habit reduces the appeal of smoking only to non-smokers according to a study in the Tobacco Control journal. It published Australian research of 3,000 cinema goers aged 12-24, who watched one film preceded by an anti-smoking ad and another which was not: 25.6% of smokers not seeing the advertisement expected to be smoking in 12 months time, compared to 38.6% of those watching the ad. "Some types of advertising may reinforce smokers' intentions to smoke," said the study.
