AIRPORT OPENS IN INDIAN HIMALAYAN STATE OF SIKKIM

THE FIRST civilian airport to operate in the Himalayan Indian state of Sikkim has started operations. Building Pakyong Airport, near the state capital Gangtok, has been an engineering challenge for Indian contractor the Punj Lloyd group, which needed to build an 80.3 metres-high reinforcement wall to stabilise the surrounding mountainous terrain. The airport is at 4,700 ft altitude and has deep valleys at both ends of its single runway.
