ABBOTT LABORATORIES PAYS OUT USD1.5 BILLION IN NON-COMPLIANCE CASE

BY LEAH GERMAIN A US district court judge has ordered global pharmaceutical manufacturer Abbott Laboratories Inc. to pay USD1.5 billion for illegally marketing its prescription drug, Depakote, for uses not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to the US Department of Justice, Abbott advertised Depakote to treat dementia and schizophrenia in ways not confirmed by the FDA.
