THE PRODUCTION of tallow and gelatine from cattle vertebral columns is safe for human consumers regarding BSE exposure and no special rules on the age of processed livestock are required, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded. A report said the increased risk was so slight it was "unlikely to translate into further cases of vCJD in the population". However, further risk assessments are required to assess whether phosphate food additives made from this material, added the report.
