BY KEITH NUTHALL THE INTERNATIONAL Chemical Secretariat - a global environmental watchdog - has added 22 chemicals to its 'SIN' list of toxic substances - all are endocrine disrupters identified as potentially harmful under European Union (EU) chemical control system REACH. Of these, the textile and clothing industry could be particularly interested in 4-nitrophenol, used in dyes and to darken leather; metam natrium, used in leather tanning as a preservative; and resorcinol, used in rubber manufacture.
