EGYPT’S STRATEGY TO BOOST AUTO INDUSTRY

The Egyptian car market has shown significant growth and transformation in recent years, with sales up the first quarter 2025 by 42.3%. China’s Chery brand experienced a 21.7% growth to become the top brand, followed by Hyundai, which saw a 158.4% increase in sales. The Egyptian vehicle market has also seen a notable rise in electric vehicles (EVs), with a 39.5% growth in the first quarter of 2025, attributed to the government’s push for sustainable transportation, which has encouraged carmakers to participate in the country’s manufacturing network. Citroën dominated the EV market, holding nearly half of the segment, this year.  The automotive industry in Egypt is also burgeoning, with 15 manufacturers assembling vehicles locally, with domestic content exceeding 45% and accounting for over 60% of national sales. The government launched the Automotive Industry Development Strategy in 2022, aiming to position Egypt as a regional hub for car manufacturing, particularly in Africa.  The national automotive industry strategy for 2024–2030 targets an annual output of 400,000 to 500,000 vehicles, with 25% allocated for export, and there is a focus on EVs to be produced this year. Where is Egypt with this strategy, what imports are selling well, and what is the outlook for EVs?
