THE MARCH towards a safer, healthier and, let's hope, less litigation-conscious cosmetics industry will quicken pace in 2013 with the May 31, deadline looming for the registration of medium-tonnage chemicals (100 to 1,000 tonne volumes) under the EU's REACH policy. REACH (the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals) does not apply directly to cosmetics, detergent and fragrance manufacturers but given their heavy use of chemicals as raw materials it will obviously be of the utmost importance to them.
