EUROPEAN COMMISSION ASKS FOR VIEWS ON POTENTIAL EXCISE DUTY SYSTEM REFORM

THE EUROPEAN Commission has asked the drinks sector to comment on how the European Union (EU) might reform its excise duty rules. These are currently only partially harmonised across the EU, with member states having to abide by minimum rates, varying according to the product sold. And while the Commission has shied away from proposing comprehensive harmonisation of rates across the EU (which would require consent from all member states), it is mulling some significant reforms.
