EU TIGHTENS GUIDANCE ON DENATURING SCENTED ALCOHOL-BASED PRODUCTS

THE EUROPEAN Union (EU) has recommended banning the use of methanol as a denaturing agent by the EU perfume sector, saying it is too dangerous to be an ingredient. Denaturing chemicals are added to liquid scent products to ensure their alcohol is not converted into drinks, thereby evading excise duty.The EU’s indirect taxation expert group has passed non-binding guidance for the personal care industry that it should stop using methanol as a denaturant for cosmetics, perfumes and personal hygiene products at concentrations up to 5% (the limit currently allowed). ...
