BY KEITH NUTHALLTHE EUROPEAN Free Trade Area (EFTA) Surveillance Authority has approved public spending and tax reduction plans worth up to Euro 49.9 million paid by the Iceland government which will support investment in the planned Alcoa aluminium smelter in Fjarðabyggð, eastern Iceland.The authority said this was because the state aid earmarked by the Iceland government will be spent in a region that is hard-pressed economically and so is eligible for regional handouts.
