BY KEITH NUTHALLWORLD tobacco and cigarette production is set to increase significantly this decade according to United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) projections, which estimates the number of smokers will grow from 1.1 billion in 1998 to around 1.3 billion in 2010.As a result, world tobacco production should top 7.1 million tonnes of tobacco leaf in 2010, up from 5.9 million tonnes in 1997/99, (which was itself a decline from the record tobacco production in 1992 of 7.5 million tonnes.The FAO explains the rise by a growth in demand in ...
