THE EUROPEAN Commission is continuing to press Armenia to close its Soviet-era Metzamor nuclear power plant, which supplies 40 per cent of the country's electricity. Commission delegation head Torben Holtze told local media representatives that Brussels would give Armenia Euro 100 million to create "alternative energy production" once its government sets a closure date for the power station, which was shut-down temporarily in 1988 because of an earthquake. "Safety is very important to us," said Mr Holtze.
