A LATE night political deal in Strasbourg has at last revealed the likely budget of the European Union's (EU) seventh framework programme: it should be Euro 48 billion. European Parliament, EU Council of Ministers and European Commission representatives struck the deal in an overall agreement on Brussels' medium term 2007-13 budget, known as the 'financial perspectives'. Commission officials warn there could still be some budgetary tinkering in formal votes at the council and parliament, but the deal was sufficiently robust for EU research ...
