BY MONICA DOBIE AMERICAN researchers from the US government's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) have created an edible coating for fresh fruits and vegetables that kills deadly E coli and gives food extra flavour at the same time. The coating is made of apple purée and oregano oil, which acts as a natural antibacterial agent. In tests, a number of oils were found to fight the growth of E coli, but oregano oil was the most effective, killing over 50% of sample bacteria in three minutes at concentrations as small as 0.034%.
